Gambling addiction or compulsive gambling is a disorder of the brain, the person affected cannot stop the impulse to gamble even if it is destroying their lives or their families. The person begins to treat important things as of less importance and begins to prioritize gambling ahead of everything else. An addict gambler does not need to have excess money to gamble, but instead all they need is access to cash doesn’t matter its source as long as the gambling goes on.
The gambler continues even if the habit drives him to bankruptcy. Once in the gambling spot, the persons that are addicts will continue to play even if luck is not on their side, they will continue to lose even if they can’t afford to. There have been examples of people who put family possessions on the line due to gambling and they lost assets that had been inherited from several generations before them.
The addicted gambler continues to sink in the mess and now becomes more concerned with getting back what has been lost. The addiction of gambling comes in different forms. It may come in the form where the gambler is addicted to the thrill of taking risks during gambling. When such a risk is taken and the outcome is a win the joy is ecstatic and the gambling becomes like a drug. Some become addicts as they used gambling as a form of stress relief i.e. they used to escape emotional pain, loneliness and aching pains. The addict does not realize that he has become an addict for gambling addiction does not have obvious symptoms such as is with drug addictions. However it is important to note that if your gambling is now causing you to withdraw from your loved ones, become secretive in your dealings then you are fast becoming an addict. Gambling addiction does not only cause financial problems, it causes one to spend lots of time gambling and less on family and friends causing important relationships to breakdown. The problem can spill over to the children and they get involved in risky behavior such as drug abuse because they lack enough parental guidance.
