With what many say is an epidemic in internet online gambling among college students, some colleges and universities are stepping in to warn students of potential dangers. Central Michigan University Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services Department member and faculty administrator Tim Otterman has decided to take it upon himself to educate students and other members of the university community about the potential pitfalls of internet online gambling, particularly focusing on sports gambling. “I am doing a sports gambling education series aimed at professional staff, the people who are going to have to deal with illegal gambling on campus,” said Otteman. “This presentation is to basically inform students about the pitfalls of getting involved with this type of activity.” Professor Otterman said that he does not yet see internet online gambling as an extreme problem on the Central Michigan University campus. However, he believes that education is the way to prevent an internet online gambling epidemic from ever occurring. “This is not a problem at CMU that I am aware of,” said Otteman. “But it is a national problem. Many illegal sports gamblers are college-aged.” Professor Otterman plans to give an educational training series to campus student services personnel, plus a campus- wide speech for students and interest parties from the community.
